the hawthornes

The name Hawthorne was not a stranger to the American ears. For generations, The Hawthornes were known for being one of the richest conglomerates in Massachusetts. Under the leadership of Alfred Hawthorne, the third generation of the family, the company was now in charge of a large percentage of properties in the United States. The holding company was also running in trading, banking, and private equities. On May 2006, Alfred Hawthorne made a shocking introduction to his family, often labeled as “The Hawthorne Grandsons” by the media. What really intrigued the public was the absence of father or son-in-law figures in the family. Previously, it was revealed that Alfred Hawthorne and his wife, Kristina Hawthorne, were blessed with two daughters: Cassandra and Elara. Despite the public spotlight, Alfred raised the three daughters privately. There was never news of marriage or pregnancy going on. Neither Alfred nor Kristina ever addressed which Hawthorne's daughter was the mother of the children. All they revealed was that they were blessed with the presence of five grandsons in the house. Questions were risen. But at the end of the day, the media and public were too tired to pay attention to a conglomerate’s family tree.Contrary to the daughters, Alfred Hawthorne often put the grandsons in the spotlight as they grew up. Together with their mothers who slowly climbed their way up in Hawthorne’s board of directors, the grandson appeared at many of their public events. Slowly, the public narrative changed from “The Sons Who Magically Appeared” to “The Future of Hawthorne.”All five grandsons shared different personalities and interests. But they all had one thing in common, they were Alfred Hawthorne’s grandsons. They inherited the brilliant Hawthorne’s quirkiness and wittiness, also his sense of puzzles and riddles. There was a well-known anecdote running in the Hawthorne manor, “there is no coincidence in this house. Everything is being put for a reason we never know. Because Hawthorne is always thinking.”Ever since they were young, Alfred Hawthorne already pushed the grandsons to “invest” in something they found interesting. Every few times in a year, the grandfather would give them money and spare a weekend with the five boys to share what they were currently investing in. They were not talking about stocks, they were talking about interests and passions. The old Hawthorne wanted his grandsons to live with a passion—something they wanted to be good at and do for the rest of their lives. It didn’t need to stay consistent, but they needed to always have a purpose to get better in something. There was only one rule in the Hawthorne investing game: “No matter what you choose, you should be the best at it.”

“Can we please stop by for a moment? I want to try it.”

It was the thirteenth day of the year and snow was as thick as ever. Reagan was only eight at the time he passed 401 Park Ice Rink, a temporal public ice rink in Boston. He looked out from his car, eyes scanning the crowd with curiosity. There were a lot of kids on that day, trying to balance their feet on ice as they held onto their parents’ hands. They seemed happy. Then, on the corner of the park, away from the kids, he could see a group of slightly older teenagers freely skating around and doing beautiful spins. The driver was reluctant to stop. He was always briefed to never let the boys stop by without any supervision—especially in an open public space like this. Scanning the reluctance and his brother’s pleading eyes, Pierre, who was fourteen at that time, reassured the employee. “We can stop by for thirty minutes or so. There will be you and Miss Witts to supervise us.” After much consideration, the two adults in the car—the driver and the nanny—agreed. When he stepped into the park, the crowd overwhelmed him instantly. Never been on a rented place before, Reagan felt out of place as he sensed the many pairs of eyes scanning him from head to toe. He held on Pierre’s hands—which was more stable than he was—on his left and Miss Witts on his right. They skated around the public rink for thirty minutes when the Young Reagan concluded, “Pierre, do you think this is something I can invest in?”Ah, the Hawthorne grandsons’ investments. Being the youngest, Reagan was the one who struggled the most with his grandfather’s program. He had not seen the world long enough to know what was interesting for him. Of course, there were many things that he liked—the plane toys, the snacks, the painting equipment. But nothing felt like it was something that was worthy of being /the best/ in. Everything felt the same until he stepped his feet on the rink. The Young Pierre ruffled his brother’s hair. “You know the rules, Hawthorne,” he cooed, “nothing is off-limit. You just have to be the best at it.”

CAREER

JUNIOR DAYS

Figure skating was fun, but it didn’t mean the practice was easy. It was hard and challenging, especially when the nine-year-old Hawthorne first learned about the basic technique—the sprint and the spins. Not to mention the various workouts and exercises outside the rink he had to keep up with in order to build his postures and flexibility. There were times, in the first year he practiced, that Reagan refused to attend his session. Not even the sight of Pierre and Maven volunteering to practice together could change his mind.“The skating I saw on 401 Park was fun. It was full of life. This isn’t fun, it’s lonely as heck. I fall alone and I get up as lonely as ever.”One day, on his umpteenth time rewatching figure skating number in the 2010 Winter Olympics, he stumbled over the routine of the Canadian ice dancing pairs, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. It was their gold medal-winning performance. The couple sparked something in Reagan as if it acted as a reminder of older teenagers in 401 Park just last year. The next time he met his coach, he asked him directly, “do you think I could do pair skating?”The question led him to his first partner, Mirabella Atkins. Despite the missing techniques, their dynamics and energy matched from the get-go. They trusted each other, which was important knowing that Mirabella will have herself lifted a lot of times. It was a rare sight—to get a good one as your first partner—but they worked. Though it never got easier, the practice was lighter with Mirabella on his side. It took them seasons of practicing together until they debuted in their first championship. Reagan was 13 at that time.Together with Mirabella Atkins, they collected medals from championships across the world. They faced a lot of side-eye from other people who singlehandedly crowned themselves as nepo-babies, but their performance and track records proved to everyone they were indeed the best at their range. By the time they got into college, they have painted a remarkable record of four gold national medals and various other medals.

2022

After eight years of skating together, Reagan and Mirabella announced they were taking a year off. The decision shocked a lot of people as they were expected to be strong contenders to represent the United States for the 2026 Winter Olympics. There was no exact reason behind the break. Both of them only mentioned they would not be participating in the series of NCAA championships and international series for the season. After eight years, the two were tired. Being a professional from a young age sucked their youth and their chance to explore the world. Not to mention, they were each other’s only partners since they started doing pair skating. So, when the young adult crisis hit, both needed some space to get their heads together. Can they do it? Are they truly the best for each other? Shall we try to skate with other people… or even go back to solo number?
